GlazenHuis new partner of BKRK Award #Glass

For many years, GlazenHuis has promoted glass in all its facets: artistic, functional and conceptual, but also traditional, industrial, contemporary and historical. Beside its own projects, this year GlazenHuis is also working as a partner to help organise the annual BKRK award in Bokrijk.

The end of last year saw the launch of a unique partnership between GlazenHuis and Bokrijk. Together they are organising the BKRK award 2020 #glass. As the Flemish Centre for Contemporary Glass Art, this collaboration is an extension of one of the centre’s main objectives: to promote glass in all its aesthetic and practical forms. The new theme of the BKRK competition is the result of inspiring discussions between artistic director Jeroen Maes and Bokrijk.

Bokrijk has been awarding the BKRK award for several years. With the project BKRK – ‘Bokrijk brand’, Bokrijk is shining a spotlight on the present, past and future of craftsmanship, with the aim of bridging the gap between contemporary design and authentic craftsmanship. After successful competitions on themes such as ceramics, leather, wood, bread and textiles, it is the turn of glass to take centre stage. The commission consists of developing an object from everyday life to display glass craftsmanship in all its facets. However, it is important that the product or project be one not yet available on the market.

Pascal Cools, director of Flanders DC, has been a jury member since last year. As the competition focuses on craftsmanship and entrepreneurship, his expertise in the field definitely brings something to the table. The jury also includes Axel Van Den Bossche, CEO of well-known brand Serax, Amélie Rombauts, design coordinator at Knack Weekend, and Anna Torfs, internationally renowned designer.

The organisation focuses on professional craftspeople and (master) students or alumni with professional ambitions. The entries will be judged on the following criteria: sustainability and creativity, innovation, connection with Bokrijk, entrepreneurship, storytelling, trends and presentation. Potential candidates can find more information at www.bkrkaward.be. The enrolment deadline is 17 May.
